Speed-to-Lead: The 5-Minute Rule

Leads called within 5 minutes are 21x more likely to close. Here's why speed matters, how MoveRight helps, and what to do when you can't call fast enough.

For: Sales AgentSales ManagerOwner / Operator

The data is clear: if you call a lead within 5 minutes, you’re 21 times more likely to qualify them compared to calling after 30 minutes. After 5 minutes, your chances drop fast. This guide explains the rule, what MoveRight does to help, and what you need to do on your end.

What this covers

This is about response time — how fast your team contacts a new lead after they reach out. The faster you respond, the more deals you close.

Who uses this

Sales agents — you make the calls. Sales managers — you enforce the rule. Owners — you set the expectation and measure the results.

The 5-minute window

Here’s what happens when a lead submits their information:

TimeLead’s mindsetYour chance
0–1 min”I just filled out a form. I’m interested right now.”Highest
1–5 min”They responded fast. This company is on it.”Very high
5–15 min”I got a text. I’ll call them back later.”Dropping
15–30 min”I already found another company.”Low
30+ min”Who is this again?”Very low

The first 5 minutes are everything. The lead is at their computer or on their phone. They’re ready to talk. If you call while they’re in that moment, you close. If you call an hour later, you’re a stranger.

How MoveRight helps

AI instant response

When a lead comes in, MoveRight’s AI texts them within 2 minutes, even if it’s 11 PM on a Sunday. This does three things:

  1. The lead feels acknowledged — they know someone got their message
  2. The AI asks qualifying questions that warm up the lead for your call
  3. You get the full AI conversation in the opportunity log before you call

Push notifications

MoveRight sends you a push notification the instant a new lead arrives. It shows:

  • Lead name and source
  • What they asked about
  • A direct link to the opportunity

Tap the notification, tap the phone number, you’re calling within 60 seconds.

Caller ID

For phone leads, MoveRight shows you the caller ID and the call recording. If you missed the call, you can call back immediately — you already know their name and what they said on the voicemail.

What you need to do

During business hours

  1. Keep MoveRight open on your browser and your phone
  2. Enable push notifications for new leads
  3. Call within 5 minutes — not email, not text, call
  4. If no answer, text immediately — “Hey [Name], tried calling about your move. Free for a quick chat?”

After hours

You can’t call every lead at midnight. That’s where the AI carries the weight:

  1. AI texts within 2 minutes
  2. AI qualifies and keeps the conversation warm
  3. The lead goes into your morning callback queue
  4. You call first thing the next morning

The key insight: the AI response counts as “first contact.” Your lead got a text within 2 minutes. They know you’re responsive. Your morning call is a warm follow-up, not a cold call.

On weekends

Same as after-hours. AI handles immediate response. You call back Monday morning — but with Monday’s callback queue, those weekend leads are the first people you dial.

Measuring your speed

MoveRight tracks your time-to-first-contact for every lead. Your sales manager can see:

  • Average response time per agent
  • Percentage of leads contacted within 5 minutes
  • Leads that went 15+ minutes without contact

If your average is over 5 minutes during business hours, something is wrong. Common fixes:

  • You’re not checking notifications → turn them on
  • You’re in a meeting → set up a rotation with another agent
  • Too many leads at once → this is a good problem, but you need coverage

Common questions

Is 5 minutes realistic? During business hours, absolutely. The AI handles after-hours. During the day, if you can’t call within 5 minutes, you need another agent covering.

What if I’m on another call? Finish your current call, then call the new lead. A 3-minute delay is fine. A 30-minute delay is not. The AI already texted them, so they’re not waiting in silence.

Does this apply to all lead sources? Yes. Web forms, phone calls, referrals — they all get the same treatment. Speed doesn’t distinguish.
