Stripe and Square Payment Setup

Connect Stripe or Square to MoveRight so customers can pay by card — setup, testing, fee structures, and payout timing.

To accept credit card payments through MoveRight, you need to connect a payment processor — Stripe or Square. This guide walks you through setup, testing, and understanding the fees.

What this does

Connecting a payment gateway lets MoveRight generate secure payment links for customers. They click, enter their card, and the payment is recorded automatically in both MoveRight and your bank account.

Who uses this

Owners — you set this up once. After that, it just works.

Before you start

  • You have a Stripe or Square account (or you’ll create one during setup)
  • Your bank account is ready to link for payouts

Recommendation: If you only take online payments through MoveRight, Stripe has slightly better rates for card-not-present transactions. If you also need in-person card readers (for crew collecting payment on-site), Square is simpler.

Setting up Stripe

Step 1: Create or connect your Stripe account

  1. In MoveRight, go to Settings → Payments → Stripe
  2. Click Connect with Stripe
  3. You’re redirected to Stripe — log in or create an account
  4. Complete the Stripe onboarding (business info, bank account, identity verification)

Step 2: Configure in MoveRight

Back in MoveRight:

  1. Verify the connection shows “Connected”
  2. Set your default payment method — “Card” for most companies
  3. Enable automatic payment receipts — customers get an email when their payment is processed

Step 3: Test with a small payment

Send yourself a $1 test invoice and pay it with your own card. Verify:

  • The payment shows in MoveRight
  • The payment shows in your Stripe dashboard
  • The payout is scheduled to your bank account

After testing, you can refund the $1 in Stripe.

Setting up Square

Step 1: Create or connect your Square account

  1. In MoveRight, go to Settings → Payments → Square
  2. Click Connect with Square
  3. Log in to Square or create an account
  4. Authorize MoveRight to access your Square account

Step 2: Configure in MoveRight

  1. Verify the connection shows “Connected”
  2. Set your default payment method
  3. Enable automatic payment receipts

Step 3: Test

Same as Stripe — send a $1 test invoice, pay it, verify everything flows through.

Fee structures

You pay the processor fee on every transaction. Here’s how it works:

Example: $1,000 invoice paid by card via Stripe

ItemAmount
Invoice total$1,000.00
Stripe fee (2.9% + $0.30)-$29.30
You receive$970.70

MoveRight records the full $1,000 as the payment. The $29.30 fee is between you and Stripe — it shows up in your Stripe dashboard and your bank statement.

Can you pass the fee to the customer? Some companies add a “convenience fee” or “credit card surcharge” to cover processing costs. Check your local laws — surcharging is regulated in some states. If you add one, add it as a separate line item on the estimate so the customer sees it upfront.

Payout timing

Card payments don’t instantly appear in your bank account:

ProcessorPayout timing
Stripe2 business days
Square1-2 business days

Weekends and holidays delay payouts. Plan your cash flow accordingly — a Friday payment won’t hit your account until Tuesday or Wednesday.

Common questions

Can I use both Stripe and Square at the same time? MoveRight allows one active payment gateway at a time. Choose one.

What if a payment fails? MoveRight shows the payment as “Failed” and the customer gets an automatic notification to try again. Common reasons: insufficient funds, expired card, wrong CVV.

How do I handle refunds? Process refunds in MoveRight, not directly in Stripe or Square. MoveRight will push the refund to your processor and record it in your books. See: Handling Disputes
